What could get your UK visa cancelled or curtailed?
Understanding which changes matter can help you protect your plans and get support early.
The Home Office can shorten or end immigration permission in certain circumstances. Different routes have different rules, and a change does not always lead to cancellation.
This guide covers selected grounds affecting permission to stay. It does not cover revocation of indefinite leave to remain or cancellation at the border.
A. Changes to your sponsor
Your permission can be affected if your employer or education provider loses its sponsor licence — even when you have done nothing wrong. A business transfer can also cause problems if the new organisation does not complete the required sponsorship steps.
Ask your sponsor for written confirmation of what has changed and what it means for your sponsorship. Keep any Home Office correspondence and get regulated advice promptly if your permission may be affected.
For Students, there is also a specific ground where sponsorship is withdrawn because, after a pre-sessional course, the student has not reached English level B2 in all four skills. This is not a blanket rule about every student's English level.
Keep an eye on your sponsor

Monitoring helps you follow register changes. It does not determine whether your own permission has been cancelled.
Current exception for care workers
The September 2026 guidance says permission must not be cancelled solely because of sponsor licence revocation for care workers in occupation codes 6135 or 6145, or senior care workers in codes 6136 or 6146, on the Skilled Worker or Health and Care Worker route.
This temporary arrangement is under review and does not prevent cancellation for another applicable reason. Read the Home Office guidance.
B. Changes to your work
A new role, a pay change or time away from work can affect the basis of your sponsorship. Problems can arise if you do not start your sponsored job, stop working for your sponsor, or change employment without completing the required immigration process.
A promotion with the same employer does not necessarily require a visa update: the occupation code and requirements for the new role matter. Before changing jobs, salary or working arrangements, ask your sponsorship team to check what needs reporting and whether a new application is required.
Unpaid or reduced-pay absence also needs checking, although exceptions apply for reasons such as sickness and specified family leave. Redundancy can lead to cancellation consideration, but your employer's redundancy notice is not itself a Home Office cancellation decision.

Being listed does not mean an employer is recruiting or will sponsor your particular role.
C. Changes to your studies
Student or Child Student permission may be affected if you do not start your course, stop studying with your sponsor, or your course ends earlier than expected. A course-start delay of more than 28 days is also a listed ground for cancellation.
Speak to your institution's international student team before deferring, withdrawing or changing where you study. Explain any illness or other circumstances and keep supporting evidence. An earlier course finish does not necessarily mean permission ends immediately.
D. Information and visa conditions
Check that information and documents submitted in your name are accurate, including anything prepared by someone helping you. False information, false documents, withheld relevant facts and deliberate deception can have immigration consequences.
Follow your visa conditions and respond to Home Office requests for information, interviews, biometrics or medical checks. If you cannot meet a request, explain why promptly. Customs breaches can also be grounds for cancellation.
E. Changes to the circumstances behind your visa
Permission is granted for a particular purpose and set of circumstances. A significant change can matter if you no longer meet your route's requirements, your purpose of entry has changed, or you depend on someone whose permission has been cancelled.
Check the reporting requirements for your route when something material changes. Where the change affects your right to stay, seek regulated advice before deciding what to do next.

F. Serious grounds
Certain criminal convictions, exclusion decisions and other serious grounds can lead to cancellation. These cases need advice from a regulated immigration adviser or qualified immigration solicitor who can consider the individual circumstances.
Frequently asked questions
Can my visa be cancelled if I change jobs?
Yes, if the change breaks the rules attached to your permission — but changing jobs through the correct process is possible. Skilled Workers normally need to update their visa when moving to a different employer or occupation code; a promotion with the same employer and occupation code does not necessarily require this. Where new permission is required, wait for it before starting the new job.

What happens if my sponsor loses their licence?
Your permission may be affected, so confirm the position with your sponsor and get regulated advice promptly. Do not assume you automatically have 60 days from the day the licence is lost: the Home Office decision and your existing expiry date matter. The temporary care-worker exception described above may apply where licence revocation is the sole reason for cancellation.
For future register changes: Find your sponsor and turn on monitoring. If the licence has already been lost, seek advice about your position.
Will a small mistake on my application get my visa cancelled?
Not automatically: an innocent typo is different from deliberate deception. However, an error can still matter if it affects whether you meet the visa requirements, so use the appropriate UKVI process to correct it and keep a record. If the Home Office alleges false information or deception, get regulated advice.
Does taking unpaid leave put my visa at risk?
It can, but not every unpaid absence is a problem. On the relevant sponsored work routes, more than four weeks of unpaid or reduced-pay absence in a calendar year can be grounds for cancellation, subject to exceptions including sickness and specified family leave. Ask your sponsorship team to check the reason, total absence and reporting requirements before agreeing a break.
What's the difference between cancellation and curtailment?
Both can mean shortening or ending immigration permission. “Cancellation” is now the main term used across many routes and can take effect immediately or on a future date; “curtailment” remains in use in particular contexts, including the EU Settlement Scheme. The wording and effective date in the decision matter more than the everyday label.
Can my dependants' visas be affected if mine is cancelled?
Yes, permission granted through your status may also be considered for cancellation. Each dependant's circumstances must be considered, so do not assume every family member will receive the same outcome. Get advice that covers the whole family.
If my circumstances change — for example, redundancy — what should I do first?
Get written confirmation of the change and check any Home Office correspondence for deadlines. For redundancy, ask your employer's sponsorship team what it has reported, and promptly seek regulated advice about your position and options. Do not wait for your original visa expiry date to start checking.
Is there a way to know in advance if I'm at risk?
You can spot changes worth checking, such as a sponsorship problem, a different job, reduced pay or an interruption to your studies.
